12-20: Community Thursday, the pre-Holiday edition!

Christmas in NYC

“Mistletoe,” said Luna dreamily, pointing at a large clump of white berries placed almost over Harry’s head. He jumped out from under it.
“Good thinking,” said Luna seriously. “It’s often infested with nargles.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

I had to start with this quote, because it made me laugh and laugh.
The photo I used above is from a trip I took some years ago with my best friend, to NYC, during the holiday season. It was cold and lovely and we walked all over so that we could see all the holiday related touristy things we could, as well as NYC high points. I’ve been there a bunch of times before and after that trip, but that’s one of my favorite memories.

Simply Notable's Balm Sock

Simply Notable’s Balm Sock

You have time to still make this before December 25th!
Uses a small amount of yarn, is adorable, and useful for covering a lipbalm or many other small items. This is from the same site that brought us the wine cork knitted trees!

YarnGeek's Puff Rib Cowl

YarnGeek’s Puff Rib Cowl

There’s nothing more exciting about offering something you created to the public for the first time! For my pal Sarah of Yarn Geek Fibers, she’s knocked it out of the park with this lovely Puff Rib Cowl pattern, available for FREE because she’s that awesome. This is another easy knit but it looks FABOO, so not only will it work up fast but you’ll wow anyone that you might want to gift it to… or if you want to wear it yourself to the Christmas party. Let her know how much you love it if you work it up, would you? I know she’d love to hear your feedback!

giving bunny

The Giving Bunny Project is a wonderful idea started by Urban Threads. [photo: Urban Threads]

This delightful bunny was designed with giving in mind. The very generous and talented folks at Urban Threads came up with the idea to make a stuffie that can be left anonymously to bring joy to someone’s life – left someplace in public or sent as a treat to someone who needs a lift, this bunny is easily made and decorated and is waiting to hop into the heart of someone right now.
[there is also a tag option for sending bunnies to those needing comfort in Newtown CT, and an address for mailing them for that purpose. Thank you, Urban Threads, for this.]

600 Monsters

600 Monsters for Connecticut Project – a cuddly monster!

Again with the sniffles, for the work that people are doing to send comfort to those who are hurting during this Holiday season. If you’d like to join in, the Ravelry group is 600 Monsters Strong for Connecticut – http://www.ravelry.com/groups/600-monsters-strong-for-connecticut.
Even if you’re not a knitter, the write-up on HuffPo is worth all the blubs and quite motivational. [well, it is for me!]

A quick mention – my super-talented friend Suzy of WoolWench has a new video out about how to spin a Big Bulky Singles yarn. She is awesome and explains things so well! I am only linking there because I want YOU to go there and watch the video and then stroll around her site. You won’t be disappointed.
