Hey hey! I’ve got spinning classes scheduled at Lovelyarns for November and December!
What you’ll get in my class, An [fun!] Intro to Spindle Spinning:
- one genuine hand-made spindle, of a weight for beginners
- approx. 1.5 oz of spinning fiber to take home, as well as fiber to be used during class
- a detailed instruction packet that includes links and book recommendations for further education
Besides the above, you’ll get a couple of hours of hands-on teaching and encouragement, a quick lesson in the differences between fibers, instruction in how to draft and ply, and coverage of how to set your twist and care for your yarn. I even have some neat tricks up my sleeve, like adding loose locks and other fibery inclusions into your yarn. All this and humor, too!
I’ll also be available online for support and cheerleading after your class – I think spinning builds community, as well as a skill.
I started teaching spindle spinning a few years ago, as a request from a local crafting group that was interested. I was woefully unprepared, yet everyone there had a blast and even made some great yarn… and I was hooked on teaching! Because I started spinning as a spindler, I have a soft spot in my heart for the low-tech skill – it’s easy to pick up, yet can be very nuanced, which makes it a craft that will keep you interested for a long time.
One of the most interesting things I’ve learned from teaching spinning is that a sense of fun helps to pick up new skills. The best students I’ve had have been kids, because they’re totally engrossed in the excitement of learning something new, without holding themselves to the strict judgment that adults sometimes can. I find that approaching learning with this same idea makes it SO much easier to succeed! I try to bring that idea to my classes, because it’s true: when you’re spinning, there’s no such thing as mistakes, just learning opportunities and untapped techniques!
I am also available for online classes, via Skype/webcam. Just leave a message here or shoot me an email to discuss the details!
